How will marching band benefit you in highschool?

I know you will get more of a social life out of it and learn how to march and all, but will you actually get really good at your instrument just by being in the marching band. Could I get really experienced off of practicing myself on theory?

By the way I play the saxophone.

Marching band can benifit you a lot, it teaches you dicipline, and marking time, it can help (A LOT) when you’re trying to get into collage (it looks really good if you stick with it) you make amazing friends and memories. You get better with your technicallity too because in marching band you are playing you part and marching while in your concert band you don’t have to focus on the marching part. Trust me its a lot of fun and I totally think it would be worth it

Any easier way to clean a trumpet than soaking it in a bathtub?

My bathroom has a shower in it, not a bath…In order for me to clean my trumpet I have to go out of my way and use someone else’s bathroom- which I don’t feel like doing. I would clean my trumpet quite regularly if it weren’t for this inconvenience. Is there anyway I can effectively clean it without a bathtub?

Should i buy a second Bass Drum for my Drum Kit or just buy a double pedal for the bass i already have?

Im talking mainly sound wise and practability, are there any advantages to having a second bass drum or is it just a waste?

Its the same sound and less of a hassle of dragging 2 bass drums with you. Most drummers at the studio use a Double Bass pedal with a single bass drum. Many drummers I speak to say that when you use 2 bass drums, the expense are always doubled. You have to replace 2 skins insterad of one and when one pedal breaks, you are screwed. The double bass pedals are somewhat more rigid.

How do I clean my Trombone?

Well I have an older trombone and I need to remove all of the gunk from the outer slide. I don’t have a snake beause the music stores I go to don’t carry one that’s long enough. Can Some one explain to me the best procedure to efffectively clean it?

if you dont have a snake, you can buy a cheap rifle cleaner, which will be perfect length.

But if that is not an option, your best bet would be to take the outer slide off and then wipe off the inner slide with a tissue or smooth cloth. Then wipe that down with water and soft cloth. Then, fill the outer slide with about 1 rinse cup of warm water. Then, hold your fingers on the holes of each end, and swish it for like 20 seconds. Empty.

Then do it with warmer water, and use more. Then you should do the same, and add a tiny bit of MILD dishsoap. swish swish swish!

then…

let it dry

then lube up the slide with either cream or oil. don’t mix!!! but iff u use cream, really rub it in. if u use cream, u can spray with small amts of water.

then just put one end of the slide back in, pull it up and down, repeat with other sides.

then play!

Where is the best place to sell my used tuba?

Everything works on it, and I just had it cleaned at the local music shop.

It’s a St. Petersburg 202N BBb concert tuba, and a Gig Bag, Hard Case, and a couple mouthpieces would be included in the price.

Should I try to sell it online? If so what are the best sites for it?

I live in a small town, and nearly nobody but the band would want it. I’ve called the band director and they don’t need it.

What are some good brands for French horn and mellophone mouthpieces?

I have two Schilkes, one a 31B and one a 27. There’s also the King Mello 6 that came with the mellophone I’m using. I can hit higher notes with the mello mouthpiece but I can produce a prettier sound with the French horn mouthpieces.
Are there any better brands?

This is one of those “Brands don’t matter” type of answers. 99% of all mouthpieces are made of brass with silver plating. The only difference between them is the shape of the cup, the rim and the size of the bore. But you take a “perfect” mouthpiece from one person and it doesn’t work for somebody else. because people are more different than mouthpieces are. So, forget about brands and just try every mouthpiece you can try until you find one that really agrees with you.

How can I buff moderate scratches off a flute?

The music store adivsed not to get it done, I don’t know why though. Can any music people tell me how to safely do this without ruining my flute? I go to flute camp on the 21st.

Hello there… It would be best if you just polish with flute with a little silver cleaner and leave the scratches alone as the music store advised. When you polish deep enough to take out scratches you also thin the metal in that area… that is why the store advised against it. Once the metal is thinner it is also weaker and more vulnerable to future damage… not to mention as others have, it would have a tendency to affect the tone quality. So, sorry about your scratches… but to prevent further ones, always wash your hands before handling or practicing the flute and afterwards, be consistent in wiping it down with a soft cloth.

what is a good product to clean a Bassoon with tarnished keys?

I have a bassoon i am getting ready to sell (i’ve had it for years). i opened the case and the keys are almost black with tarnish and it has a weird stench (it is coming from the keys, not inside). what could have caused this and what is a good product to clean it?

Bacteria causes the smell. Clean it with either Brasso or Duraglit.

What is the difference between a baby grand piano and a vertical piano?

I mean besides the style. Do they sound any different? I’m thinking of buying a baldwin piano, but I don’t know if there is any more of a difference between the two pianos besides the style. I really want to learn how to play piano though, so I am. I’d like a baby grand, but most are way too expensive, If I get one, I’m gonna look for something in the 20k-25k zone.

Going against most of your answers. A professional (45″ or more) vertical (upright) piano is going to be better than a small grand (5′ 6″ and under) because the string length on the upright will be longer, and the area of the soundboard will be MUCH greater. Small grands are most often sold as furniture, not as serious professional instruments. There are exceptions to the rule; the Baldwin R1 (5′ 8″) is a very respectable small grand; it also has a price tag of $48,000. The Steinway M (5′ 7″) though, I’m not particularly thrilled with the S (5′ 1″); the Mason & Hamlin B (5′ 4″) is perhaps the smallest piano I would consider professional quality in terms of build and sound.

For uprights I’d look to Kawai, Yamaha, Charles R. Walter, August Förster, Mason & Hamlin as top tier pianos.

What are some keys to encouraging my daughter (age 11) to stick with playing the oboe?

Neither my wife or I are musical, but she is showing some promise with the oboe. She likes challenges, but dislikes compitition. That’s why she chose the oboe. She seems to be concerned that compitition will increase in the next few years. Also, she, like most, doesn’t like to practice.

When I was child I was most encouraged by being around other musicians. Have friends or family who play any instrument come over and play just for fun. Infomal jam sessions with artists at her level can also be very encouraging and give her something other than competition to think about. At eleven, she may not be concerned with success, but she can still worry about failure. Make sure she just enjoys it.

What’s the difference between Clarinet in B and Tenor Saxophone?

I am first seat clarinet this year and going to play tenor saxophone for the Jazz Band. What do I need to know to play tenor saxophone?

Biggest difference in fingering is when you use the register key. On a clarinet when you use the register key to go up you have to change your fingering. On a saxophone when you change registers the fingering stays the same. You’ll also have to adjust your embouchure and learn how to control your breathing.

How do I make myself practice the cello more?

I play the cello, but I can not make myself practice enough. I have to play at least 1/2 hours a day, but I can not make myself do that. I usually forget that I have to practice. Any suggestions?

Try thinking about it in terms of doing 5 specific things, rather than thinking about spending 30 minutes. In other words, make a list of 5 things you want to do, and once you do those, you’ll be done.

For instance, starting with a couple of scales, or whatever you usually start with. That could be the first thing. Then moving on to playing the first half of the piece you’re working on, noting whatever it is that you’re working on in that piece, and working on that piece for a bit. That’s the 2nd thing. And so on, until you’ve done five things. Chances are, your 30 minutes will be up and the time will have passed more quickly because you’re thinking in terms of accomplishing small tasks, rather than thinking about the time. Well, the ultimate best option is to find a local music store and go there.

It’s difficult to describe everything to look for online, especially without first being aware of your general price range.

Because of this, I strongly suggest that you go to a music store. You can give them your price range, and they’ll do everything they can to help you find a perfect instrument for your needs. In my experience, many small music store owners and workers play string instruments themselves and have a lot of experience in it.

However, if you can’t find a local music store or for some reason don’t want to go to one, you can look online. My ultimate recommendation for an online purchase is Southwest Strings. They have good quality instruments, decent prices, and their Customer Service is very helpful in describing the ins and outs of the purchase of a new String Instrument. I buy most of my music accessories from there, and have used a few of their higher quality instruments.
