Jane Campion’s The Piano struck a deep chord (if you’ll excuse the expression) with audiences in 1993, who were mesmerized by the film’s rich, dreamlike imagery. It is the story of a Scottish woman named Ada (Holly Hunter), who has been mute since age 6 because she simply chose not to speak. Ada travels with her daughter Flora (Anna Paquin) and her beloved piano to a remote spot on the coast of Ne…

I have a question about piano fingering and Hanon exercises?

I have just started the Hanon exercises using the Hanon Revisited book. It has 60 exercises total. I was told this would help with my fingering and strengthening of the fingers. I have been playing for a week, so far I have feel I have master the first two exercises, but I’m not really sure when to move on? Where do you draw the line as far as playing them ‘perfect’ so that you can move on to the next?
Also, the main question I have is fingering. I took piano lessons as a child and never really cared much to pay attention to fingering but now I find it very important. Will the exercises in this book, once you have mastered them with the fingering and tempo, cause the correct fingering to somehow become automatic for your fingers when playing more difficult songs? At this point, I haven’t quite mastered fingering yet, it can get a little tricky. I need to know if these exercises will help with that. Thanks

Hanon is basically for strengthening your fingers and ensuring that they’re all of equal strength. Although they will help your playing, you can’t rely on them to build “automatic fingerings”. You can move on from an exercise when you can play through it at a pre-determined tempo flawlessly.

What will help with learning fingerings and making them more instinctive is Czerny Etudes. Although they’re difficult, they’ve helped me more than anything.

Also, practice sightreading a lot. That will help big time. Mozart and Haydn etudes are great because they’re easier to read (especially the Henle urtext).
