Guitar and banjo “hardware”- why are the tuners differently designed?
Can someone please enlighten me on an interesting point. I have recently replaced the tuners on a guitar and a banjo and I was struck that both instruments are broadly similar yet the preferred tuner design is quite different.
I should point out I am talking about “top of the range” type instruments here. For instance, take a good quality banjo. It will have geared tuning “pegs” which come straight out the back of the instrument. Conversely a good quality guitar will have tuners – Grovers or such- which have handles which come out at 90 degrees.
I know that many cheap or “Old Time” banjos also use guitar type tuners but never have I seen the reverse situation- where banjo type Tuning Pegs are used on a guitar. Is there any reason why this should be?
Please PLEASE note that this is a specific question about banjo tuning pags and guitar tuners. I don’t invite correspondence form people droning on about their gibson banjos, martin D28’s or whatever.
I dunno , history of both instruments is probably a weak factor , maybe a luthier in here can answer the direct question while avoiding all the ambiguity of it all – MY simple (mostly non sufficient) answer would be “cause it’s just like that , and thats the way it is…” LOL!
