How do I make a sound out of my trumpet?!?

Here’s the deal: I just got a ‘used’ Holton trumpet, and I haven’t ever played the trumpet before, and I can’t seem to get a sound out of it. I have braces, and can’t tell if this is the problem. I orginally played the clariney for 2 years, and decided I wanted to go farther and more advanced in my musical career, so I wanted to try the trumpet. Please, dear god, give me advice on how to make a sound! Ah, and please no ‘good luck’ comments either . Thanks!

Playing the trumpet with braces is difficult, but not impossible. It might get a little painful, but if that happens you can cover your brackets with wax or something. I learned with braces, and believe me it is a LOT easier to play when they come off.

To play, pucker your lips and blow into the mouthpiece. Try to concentrate your air and make sure you have good breath support. The trumpet takes more air then the clarinet. Don’t clench your jaw together.

Playing any instrument is about creating vibrations. When playing a woodwind instrument, the reed vibrates. However, when playing a brass instrument, your lips vibrate, and those vibrations are carried to the bell of your instrument to create sound. So let your lips vibrate, it’s what makes noise.

Playing higher and lower pitches is a combination of using the valves, tightening your embouchure, or your lips, and using more air. Playing higher notes will be difficult at first, and will take some practice.
