What piano should I get?

I love playing piano and I need sumthing to practice on. I need sumthing with weighted keys, at least 64 note poly, record functions something with a lot of authentic sounding voices over 330 something I can really make music on and compatible with music making software.portable definitely plz advice greatly appreciated!! Usb and midi also so I can save my songs on flash card or something

Well if you want to go down the MIDI controller path and have all the sounds in music software then I’d go for M-Audio which allows for USB connection but it cannot make sounds as a stand-alone unit and you’d have to run the sounds in the music software.

Given that you are a pianist wanting record your songs, what I’d suggest would be an electronic stage piano. Korg or Kurzweil make some nice ones, some people go for Yamaha, personally don’t. One important thing about electronic stage pianos is that you need to make sure you’re getting one with decent action. If you get used to crap action the it can affect your playing on real pianos. Try to avoid semi-weighted actions. They feel horrible. They don’t have USB connectivity but they do however have MIDI connections, in which case you’d just get a USB MIDI interface to plug into your computer via USB and the MIDI plugs would go into the back of the keyboard. For a MIDI interface, I’d go Edirol, cheap and very reliable.

Make sure your computer has some decent computing power and RAM if you are going to record with MIDI. The less power, the more latency (delay between the sound being triggered and the sound being played). So when you play back the piece it would sound really weird and out of time. If you want to record in good quality and not have to deal with piano samples, then I’d get an audio interface and plug the audio out in the keyboard to the line-in on the interface and track it in some audio software. Though mind you, I don’t think it would be necessary for your requirements.

One other way of doing this is a synth workstation like the Roland Fantom G8. You don’t need a computer. It has a built in sequencer software and an LCD colour screen. It’s pretty much a computer with keys. You can also connect it do your computer and get your songs off it as audio files and you can put in your own samples to run on it. Though it is pricey and it’s more for professional use.

I personally have an M-Audio Axiom 61 plugged via USB into my MacBook running into Reason 4 and outputs to an M-Audio Firewire 410 so I can use it on stage. At home I use it for writing song ideas to pitch to the band.

Anyway. That’s enough rambling from me. Hope this helps.
