how to understand guitar completely?

okay this is my situation i want to understand piano notes as well as the guitar notes for example there some chords called augmented i mean how is it augmented and why those notes and what does Lydian mode and all those other mean and i want to understand those complex chords.

all i have learned is scales of keys but im still confused on these chords so can somebody tell me whats a good dvd to buy or what to do so i can understand this music theory please you would be a life saver.

ps. i have been playing for a while and these dvds i have bought seems to be getting me nowhere. and im not interested in lessons anymore. i want something simple so i can understand these complex and all those notes etc etc.

the dvd i bought:

like rock house guitar method dvd and

the guitar grimoire dvd got me nowhere but i do want to understand that guitar grimoire dvd it has a lot of information i just don’t understand it.

and am afraid to buy anything else not being worth while.

There are 4 main types of chords:
Major – consists of the root, a major third, and a perfect fifth.
Minor – consists of the root, a minor third, and a perfect fifth.
Diminished – consists of the root, a minor third, and a diminished fifth.
Augmented – consists of the root, a major third, and an augmented fifth.

An augmented fifth is just one semitone higher than a perfect fifth and a diminished fifth is just one semitone lower than a perfect fifth.

Modes are one of those things that are hard to understand until you finally get it and then they’re so simple and just make sense. The seven modes of the major scale are:
Ionian – The ionian mode is commonly known as the Major scale. It’s notes a spaced the same distance as all of the white keys from C to C. The whole step/half step formula is WWHWWWH.
Dorian – The dorian mode has notes that are spaced the same as the white keys from D to D. The whole step/half step formula is WHWWWHW.
Phrygian – The phrygian mode has notes that are spaced the same as the white keys from E to E. The whole step/half step formula is HWWWHWW.
Lydian – The lydian mode has notes that are spaced the same as the white keys from F to F. The whole step/half step formula is WWWHWWH.
Mixolydian – The mixolydian mode has notes that are spaced the same as the white keys from G to G. The whole step/half step formula is WWHWWHW.
Aeolian – The aeolian mode is also known as the natural minor scale. It has notes that are spaced the same as the white keys from A to A. The whole step/half step formula is WHWWHWW.
Locrian – The locrian mode has notes that are spaced the same as the white keys from B to B. The whole step/half step formula is HWWHWWW.

I have a few of the Guitar Grimoire books. I would highly recommend the exercise book. Alot of the exercises are just running through your modes. Its a good way to commit them to memory.
