How can i improe range on the trumpet?

I’ve been playing for about a week and yesterday and today I have been able to hit a G right above the staff (G5). but I want to be able to hit those high C’s. Early on when i plactice, I can usually get a B right below a C6 but not with regularity.

Edit: Hahaha. I just noticed that it says you’ve been playing for a week. Just keep practicing. You’ll get there. Don’t worry. Get yourself a private teacher, and work on your music in 30 minute practice intervals. Always take a 10 minute break from time to time. Eventually, your muscles will develop and you will be playing higher and higher in range.

When I first began brass, I had the same issue as you. I could hit the “G” tone but had trouble going up to the “C” tone (the C… for you… Bb for trombone players). Just keep practicing! Eventually, you’ll find it’s very easy to hit that high C – provided that you have put in the necessary hours.

Well, hopefully you have a teacher. You must have a private teacher, even if it’s for only 1 lesson every month.

Exercises are fine; bringing your mouthpiece with you everywhere is good, but if your trumpet only comes out of its case for 20 minutes a day… well, you won’t be making any progress. You have to practice diligently, every single day, in order to start building the muscles specific to your instrument. There are many muscles in your face that you must use on a daily basis in order to improve your tone and range.

You’ll have to practice long tones and passages (high passages… over and over) in your high register every day. This is on top of your other practice routines… which hopefully you already have. Your school band (or wherever you normally play) doesn’t emphasize/force you to play in the high range. It’s vital that you practice it at home.

You may have to transpose passages into your high register in order to develop enough stuff to practice. It’s all about practicing in that high register for a sustained amount of time. You might find it hard, and your embouchure will tire out. This is fine. It just means that you need to keep practicing. Remember to take breaks. Come back to practicing some more after a nice break. You know, when your lips aren’t so tired anymore. Don’t injure yourself. You can take 5-10 minutes of break every 30 minutes.

Practicing lip slurs will also help you. These make your embouchure strong. Do a lot of those every day. Lip slurs don’t help other instrumentalists (clarinetists, flutists, etc.) as much as they help brass players.

The basic answer is simple though. You need to increase the amount of time that you are practicing. Playing in the high range requires strength in the muscles controlling your embouchure. You cannot develop this strength with minimal practice time.

You wouldn’t expect to develop huge muscles while weight training for 15 minutes a day, would you?

Also… I would skip the goofy pencil exercise and just take out your instrument more often. That will make you a social outcast in most situations anyway.
