Do you need to apply the ambiguous case during a word problem using the law of sines?

For instance: in a children’s park a slide is 27 feet long and makes an angle of 39 degrees with the ground. Its top is reached by a ladder 18 feet long. What is the angle of inclination of the ladder. When drawing the picture, you are given SSA implicating that you apply the ambiguous case formulas before proceeding with the Law of Sines. Common sense says the angle for the ladder cannot be obtuse because the children wouldn’t be able to climb the ladder that way. Can anyone clarify this, or is my thinking correct?

Your reasoning is correct. There is nothing in the problem that would fix the ladder to the vertical, so you shouldn’t assume that the slide forms a right triangle. You are right to consider the given information (SSA), but you are also correct that common sense says the angle for the ladder can not be obtuse. It is a little like getting a negative answer for a problem that asks for the length of a side. The ambiguous case would be extraneous.
