How do I stop my snare drum from buzzing whenever I hit a Tom Tom?

My Drum Set is nice but when ever i hit any tom or my Bass Drum the snare buzzes. How can I keep this from happening? Would it help to take off the bottom of all the toms?
Please help!

Short answer: you can’t……….unless you throw your snares off.

You can adjust the tension of the snares with the fine tuning screw on the throw-off switch but if you want thing to stop buzzing, there’s nothing else you can do. People are going to tell you to put an damper on or tape the snares down. Well, the damper only applies to batter heads (the side you hit). You NEVER want anything like a damper on the snare drum’s resonant head (the side you don’t hit) especially something like tape.

Music is nothing merely more than vibrating objects that produce a certain tone, timbre and pitch through the air. Drumheads vibrate with sound. It’s all in the science of things. Your snares (which vibrate on and from the vibrating resonant head) will buzz with anything that makes sound (other instruments, your voice, even clicking you sticks). Go ahead and hum into your snare different pitches. The snares will buzz. Some pitches produce more buzz than others based on what the Drum Heads are “tuned” to and their position in the overtone series (a musical concept that’s more physics really).

My suggestion:
Try tuning you toms to different pitches. Not drastically. Just a little so that they don’t cause the snare to vibrate “with” them. Find a tuning that will minimize the “louder” buzz. Keep the bottom heads on your toms on or it’ll sound “boomy” and have little tone. Look up on the web as well for tips on tuning individual drums. There’s a lot of theories out there so find one that works for your “taste” or make one up of your own from reading and trying others.
