Just need some tuba help?
I am 4th year tuba player. I have been first chair all state for 2 years now. I am in the twelth grade. In four years I have developed a tremendous range CCC-B2. I have played peices like Arban’s Carnival of Venice for Trombone, Czardas by Baadsvik, The Blue Bells of Scotland by Pryor, Vocalise by Rachmaninoff, and Serenade by Persichetti. I have a young junior high friend who is just starting out on tuba. He is having trouble with a low Bb. Any pointers?
Share with him what YOU do to reach this note!
Pointers from the best music educators (performers are included in this) come from experience and collaboration with others.
I suggest you sit down and become aware of what you do, physically, to reach the note. What kind of breath support to you use? How is your embouchure (firm vs. relaxed)? How much air speed and support is needed? What about posture? If you can sit down with him and *physically* demonstrate what YOU do to reach the note, he has a visual cue AND a vocal cue while you’re explaining it to him.
Musicians learn from other musicians. If what you do doesn’t help him, connect him with other tubists in your band, or, ask how they reach that note and relay it to your friend. The more techniques he can utilize, the more likely he will be able to find something that works for him.
This can be a painful process, but be patient and encouraging with him. Let him know there are lots of ways to reach the note, he just needs to find *his* way.
