What to do before taking violin lessons?

My mom is finally getting me lessons, and I want to know what to do before I start. She asked me if I knew how to read music, and I kind of do, but I don’t want to embarrass myself. What should I do before taking them?

Your instructor will not embarrass you or expect you to know how to read music. As you learn they will direct you in that regard and as part of your instruction will have you obtain a good instructional book/pamphlet.
The first lesson or so avoid asking a lot of questions (except to clarify what the instructor is saying – do not come across like you are challenging their expertise after you follow this suggestion.) Make a list of questions that you have, then after 3 or 4 lessons your questions are not addressed then let your instructor know that you want to ask some questions before starting the lesson.
To facilitate your instruction with a private instructor, before hand, visit some on-line instructional sites. Many have a one month trial fee so you can review their core learning system and see what instructional materials and aids you need. DO NOT SPEND A LOT OF MONEY FOR A VIOLIN. Start with an inexpensive one by searching on E-bay (many reliable sellers there – check out their feedback). Most are made of spruce, etc. The longevity is the biggest difference, but that isn’t your concern when you are learning, especially if you need a 1/2 size, 3/4 Size Violin. Once you have lugged your inexpensive violin around and used it to practice on if you decide to progress and enjoy playing once you get past the stomach butterflies (normal) then you can can consider some $300 type violins. If you decide to play in college or more formally with concerts then you can upgrade to a violin over $800. I guarantee you that if your cheap violin is set up correctly the differences will be subtle and you will have to have some experience to notice those differences. I have guitars like that.

Finally, you can do a search under music at Amazon.com, musiciansfriend.com, to find some basic resources about playing the violin which will give you vocabulary, etc. before you begin lessons with an instructor. You want to be sure to use the time wisely when you pay for lessons! A good instructional DVD for violin for your tv or computer so you can stop/start as you need to while learning is excellent also. But keep a journal as you are learning and write down your questions – and the answers you receive. Note when you learned your answer and how in your journal. Keep track of your resources and on-line favorites!!
